About LuzMaria
LuzMaria Hernandez is the Senior Coordinator for Recruitment Events and Marketing at the University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, where she leads strategic recruitment, marketing, and event initiatives that strengthen enrollment and enrich the student experience. Since beginning her higher education career in 2019, she has advanced through progressively responsible recruitment and events roles, earning a reputation for building meaningful connections with prospective students, families, faculty, and community partners. Her responsibilities span recruitment outreach for undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, marketing strategy development, website and promotional content coordination, and oversight of signature events such as Convocation and the White Coat Ceremony.
Driven by a student-centered philosophy, Hernandez has transformed recruitment into an experience rooted in mentorship, belonging, and opportunity. She founded and expanded the College of Pharmacy's Student Ambassador Program into a thriving network of 42 ambassadors across two campuses, empowering students to represent the college through campus tours, recruitment events, and community engagement. Known for her collaborative leadership style, she believes the most effective recruitment begins with authentic storytelling and creating environments where students feel welcomed, supported, and inspired to succeed from their first interaction through graduation.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hernandez is committed to developing future leaders and fostering inclusive communities. A charter member and one of nine founding members of the University of Arizona's first Hispanic-founded sorority, she has consistently championed representation, mentorship, and service throughout her career. She attributes her success to empowering others, earning the trust of institutional leadership, and leading with integrity, compassion, and purpose. As higher education continues to evolve, Hernandez remains dedicated to bridging institutional goals with student success, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to thrive both academically and personally.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my commitment to empowering and mentoring students while creating meaningful opportunities for their growth and success. I have also been fortunate to earn the trust and confidence of college leadership, which has given me the autonomy to innovate and make a positive impact. Above all, I approach every initiative with wholehearted dedication and a genuine passion for enhancing the student experience.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the most impactful pieces of career advice I received came from a former dean who said, "All I need to do with you is tell you to go, and get out of your way." That statement reinforced the importance of trust, autonomy, and accountability. It inspired me to lead with confidence, take initiative, and empower others in the same way.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women to lead by example, be confident in sharing their accomplishments, and embrace opportunities to grow as leaders. Building a strong professional presence is important, but so is lifting others along the way. By empowering those around you and remaining authentic, you can create a lasting and meaningful impact.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest opportunities in higher education is showcasing the complete student experience—not only academic excellence but also leadership development, student engagement, and personal growth. Highlighting these experiences can help attract and retain students. At the same time, the field faces challenges such as increased competition for enrollment and the consolidation of academic programs as institutions adapt to changing demographics and financial pressures.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me most are student-centered service, mentorship, empowerment, trust, and integrity. I believe in investing in others, fostering meaningful relationships, and approaching every responsibility with wholehearted commitment. These principles shape both my professional leadership and my personal life.
