About Lydia
Lydia Dompey is a special education teacher with 16 years of experience in the field of education. Born and raised in Ghana, she developed a passion for supporting persons with disabilities after taking on the care of her visually impaired niece, which led her to enroll in a teacher's training college for an associate degree. She later earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in English language, with her master's research focusing on gender and disability through a comparative study of inclusion and accessibility in Ghana and the United States. Dompey holds certifications as a special education teacher, in AI for teachers, for students with multilingual languages, and in teaching practice. She is a former member of the International English Teachers Association. In addition to her teaching role, she has created a small foundation to help women with disabilities and is currently assisting 10 girls with various disabilities in navigating college and universities. Her work emphasizes honesty, showing up, and commitment, and she values helping students achieve new milestones, such as a dyslexic student advancing from below third-grade to fourth-grade reading level and writing a full paragraph.

Ten minutes with Lydia
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Persons with disabilities have vision. The only thing they need is getting someone to lead those visions through. I always avail myself to them so that they can lead the vision through me. We can build our vision together.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is policies to help these amazing individuals, especially policies not being implemented in other parts of the world and even in the U.S. The good aspect is helping these people achieve new things, like a student with dyslexia who improved from below 3rd grade to 4th grade reading level and writing a whole paragraph.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, showing up, and being committed to what you do. Showing up earnestly, and being committed to what you do.
