Her Story

About Madeline

I grew up being in sports all my life, which gave me a strong exercise background. When I first started working with the campus rec team at Wingate University, I was so confused on where I wanted to be in life. I thought this was going to be a temporary job before I found my footing in the new environment. But once I established my footing here, I grew so much as an individual because I got that confidence in the setting that I had never had before. I found a community like I do here, and I just felt like I belonged. It took me a while to feel that way because I was honestly shutting people out at first, but I made sure that I was like, okay, these people are here to teach me and help me grow. This community has really been the best thing that I've had here. In the fitness industry, you're constantly ever moving and nothing's ever permanent nowadays, so you have to be self-aware, know who you are, and be confident in yourself. It's okay to not know something, and your community is literally here to help you become the best version of yourself.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would definitely give that, be confident in yourself, because you might not be the most confident person in the room, you might not know everything in the room, but people tend to hang around and give advice to the people who want to learn or that are not afraid to ask questions. I'm a learner, I'm a knower, and it's been so hard for me to want to ask questions because I do have that social anxiety every once in a while, but I will say having that confidence in wanting to be a learner and asking those questions has been the thing that has benefited me the most in the last couple years. When I went to convention in February with the campus rec team, it was all of the campus rec fitness and wellness programs along the east coast of the United States, and 60 schools all got together to share knowledge of fitness and wellness and group fitness. Just asking those questions, getting to be friends with other people, but being approachable was the best thing for that convention, because you got to learn so much more when you asked those questions.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I feel like knowledge and power are very influential to me, because I grew up with my single mom being the head of the household, and she always taught me that knowledge is the most powerful thing that anyone can possess. It's something that nobody can take away from you. Once you know something, literally nobody can take that from you. She'd always drive me to be a knower, a learner, and always want to be better than I was the day prior. I feel like knowledge and power are just two attributes that everybody should live by.
