Her Story

About Madeline

I started in a high school vo-tech biomed program and got hooked on medical laboratory science after a classmate showed me around the lab. I attended Oklahoma Christian where the program director prepared us rigorously. Now as a traveling generalist on night shift, I run QC, maintain instruments, draw patients, and process samples in ER settings. I've also done intensive blood bank work at trauma and children's hospitals during contracts.

Ten minutes with Madeline

01What do you attribute your success to?

My parents really took a lot of pressure off of me when I was going to school, especially during clinicals. They would help out a lot if I needed any help at all.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Take notes and ask questions. My field changes all the time with new instrumentation and processes, and I've had to read over a thousand SOPs across hospitals.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to speak up if something or someone is doing things that are against the hopsital and/or your laboratory policies. Once you start your career as a MLS, it will be fast paced at times, but just remember to breathe and take your time. You only have two hands and can only do so much at a time. Also, sometimes you will get yelled at by the doctors and sometimes nurses, but again just breathe and try to answer their questions to the best of your abilities. Don't let them bully you into doing something you are not comfortable with.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Keeping Christ in the forefront of my mind at all times in my professional and personal life.
