About Madeline

I am retired from corrections after a long career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. My last position was Director of Rehabilitation Programs where I oversaw reentry, chaplaincy, and pre-release programs. I served as a warden and worked closely with the Winner's Circle group to help ex-offenders. I also held an interagency role as a correctional program specialist working with facilities across the US including Guam and Saipan.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

They have to first of all be strong and have empathy for individuals that are incarcerated but also be cognizant of the fact that discipline is a truism. Also maintain outside life be it church or community activities something to keep themselves grounded. Know that everyone that's incarcerated for whatever reason deserves a chance to be treated as a human being. Inmates also need to know that they are cared for. You have to come in with your own agenda in working in that population and stay true to yourself. Have a belief in God or your higher power.
