About Madilyn

Madi Zapata is a Behavioral Health Technician and Regional Center Ambassador with Training Wheels ABA, where she has built a growing career in applied behavior analysis over the past two years. She began her professional journey working as a hair stylist, but transitioned into behavioral therapy in search of greater stability and consistency. What ultimately drew her to the field—and kept her in it—was her first exposure to the impact of ABA therapy and the meaningful progress she witnessed in children on the autism spectrum during the interview process. She started her ABA career as a Behavior Technician working with children ages 2–10, supporting them in developing communication, social, and adaptive skills. After six months, she was promoted to Lead Behavior Technician, where she trained and supported new staff entering the field. Her strong performance and leadership potential led to her next promotion as Regional Center Ambassador, a role in which she advocates for behavior technicians across multiple clinics, helps ensure fair treatment and support for staff, and contributes to maintaining high-quality care for clients. She continues to work part-time as a technician, stepping in when clinics are short-staffed and staying closely connected to direct client care. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Madi plays an active role in fostering team culture and engagement across her organization. She frequently travels between clinics in the Austin area to recognize staff milestones, support team events, and help create meaningful moments for both employees and clients. From organizing appreciation events and mini carnival activities for children to contributing to internal newsletters and highlighting team achievements, she blends advocacy, creativity, and compassion in her daily work. Her commitment is rooted in supporting both the children she serves and the technicians who make their progress possible, ensuring that care is delivered in an environment built on encouragement, respect, and connection.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to the opportunities, trust, and support I’ve received from my company and leadership team. When I first entered this field, I never imagined the path my career would take. The encouragement to grow, take on new challenges, and step into leadership roles has allowed me to develop both professionally and personally. I’m incredibly grateful for the mentors and colleagues who have invested in me along the way, and I believe that environment of trust and growth has been a major factor in my success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to be passionate about your work while also protecting your well-being. In helping professions, it’s easy to give everything you have to your clients, team, and organization, but sustainable success requires balance. Taking time to recharge allows you to show up as your best self, make better decisions, and provide higher-quality support to those around you. Prioritizing mental health and self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice would be to give yourself time to learn and grow before deciding whether the field is right for you. Working in behavioral health can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when you’re learning new approaches and supporting individuals with diverse needs. Be patient with yourself, stay open-minded, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The impact you can make in a child’s life is truly remarkable, and watching that growth unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of the profession.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in our field is the continued growth and evolution of behavioral therapy. As research advances and best practices develop, we have more tools than ever to create meaningful outcomes for the individuals and families we serve. At the same time, one of the greatest challenges is ensuring that professionals across all settings feel supported, connected, and valued. Whether team members work in clinics, schools, or in-home environments, creating a culture of recognition, collaboration, and appreciation is essential to maintaining strong teams and delivering exceptional care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Compassion is the value that guides both my professional and personal life. In our field, we work with individuals facing unique challenges, and we often support families and team members through difficult moments as well. I believe in approaching people with empathy, understanding, and kindness, recognizing that everyone is carrying experiences we may not see. Whether I’m supporting a client, collaborating with a colleague, or connecting with someone in my personal life, I strive to create an environment where people feel heard, valued, and supported.
