Ten minutes with Madison

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the exceptional leaders, mentors, colleagues, and team members who have invested in my growth throughout my career. Their guidance, trust, and collaboration have shaped not only my professional development but also my leadership philosophy. I firmly believe that the strongest organizations are built by people who are willing to invest in one another, and I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to learn from those around me.

Equally important is my genuine passion for the work I do. I am energized by the intersection of technology, innovation, and human services, and I am driven by the opportunity to develop solutions that improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. That passion inspires me to approach every challenge with curiosity, creativity, and a commitment to continuous learning.

I have always held myself to exceptionally high standards and naturally gravitate toward precision and excellence. While my perfectionist mindset has taught me the importance of balancing high expectations with adaptability, it has also become one of my greatest strengths. It motivates me to continually refine processes, solve complex problems, and deliver thoughtful, high-quality results. Above all, I strive to lead with integrity, foster collaboration, and make a meaningful, lasting impact through the work I do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most impactful career advice I have received has come through the mentorship of Shaleea Shields, whose leadership and unwavering support have profoundly influenced both my professional and personal growth. Throughout my career, she has challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, embrace opportunities that once felt beyond my reach, and develop the confidence to lead with purpose and authenticity.

More than simply offering career guidance, Shaleea has demonstrated what exceptional leadership looks like by investing in others, leading with integrity, and empowering those around her to succeed. During both professional milestones and personal challenges, she has reminded me of the importance of resilience, perseverance, and trusting the process, even when the path forward is uncertain.

Her mentorship has reinforced my belief that success is rarely achieved alone. It is built through meaningful relationships, a commitment to lifelong learning, and the willingness to surround yourself with people who challenge, inspire, and encourage you to become the best version of yourself. The lessons she has shared continue to shape my leadership philosophy and influence how I strive to mentor, support, and empower others throughout my own career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to approach every opportunity with curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to learn. Be a sponge—ask questions, seek feedback, observe great leaders, and never stop investing in your own growth. Every experience, whether it's a success or a challenge, has something valuable to teach you.

At the same time, don't underestimate the value of your own voice. Your perspective, experiences, and ideas are just as important as those of professionals who have been in the field for decades. While experience brings wisdom, fresh perspectives often spark innovation. Have the confidence to contribute, speak up when you have something meaningful to share, and trust that your insights deserve to be heard.

Don't allow your age, title, or years of experience to define your potential or diminish your sense of belonging. You have earned your seat at the table, and your contributions can make a meaningful impact from day one. The most effective leaders are not those who know everything—they are those who remain humble enough to keep learning while having the courage to lead authentically. Believe in yourself, embrace every opportunity to grow, and never be afraid to challenge the status quo in pursuit of better outcomes for the people and communities you serve.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges facing the human services field today is navigating an environment of constant change. Medicaid policies, waiver programs, reimbursement models, and regulatory requirements continue to evolve at both the state and federal levels, requiring providers to remain agile while ensuring individuals continue to receive high-quality, uninterrupted services. Keeping pace with these changes demands continuous learning, strategic planning, and the ability to adapt quickly without losing sight of person-centered care.

At the same time, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies is fundamentally reshaping how human services are delivered. While AI presents tremendous opportunities to improve efficiency, streamline administrative processes, and enhance service delivery, it also requires organizations to evaluate how these tools are implemented thoughtfully. The challenge is ensuring that innovation complements—not replaces—the human relationships, compassion, and individualized support that are at the heart of our field.

I believe the organizations that will thrive are those that embrace change rather than resist it. Success will depend on remaining informed, being willing to innovate, and creating a culture of continuous learning. By thoughtfully integrating new technologies while staying responsive to evolving Medicaid systems and maintaining a steadfast commitment to person-centered care, we can improve outcomes and expand opportunities for the individuals and communities we serve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life are communication, integrity, loyalty, and empathy. I believe that meaningful communication is the foundation of every strong relationship, fostering trust, collaboration, and transparency. Integrity and loyalty build lasting connections and create a shared sense of accountability, while empathy allows us to lead with compassion and understanding, especially during times of challenge or change.

Empathy holds a particularly meaningful place in my work. In the human services field, it is essential to view every decision through the lens of the individuals and families we serve. Taking the time to understand another person's experiences, challenges, and goals enables us to create more thoughtful, person-centered solutions that promote dignity, independence, and inclusion. I believe the most impactful innovations are those that are developed with people—not simply for them.

As a leader, I strive to foster a culture built on trust, respect, and collaboration, where people feel heard, valued, and empowered to contribute. Whether I am supporting my team, partnering with clients, or advocating for individuals with disabilities, I aim to lead with authenticity, compassion, and accountability. These core values shape not only the decisions I make, but also the kind of leader, colleague, and person I aspire to be every day.
