Her Story

About Madison

Madison McFerren owns and operates a women's boutique in Huntsville, Alabama, which she opened after approximately four years of experience in retail management and summer boutique work during college. She earned her undergraduate degree in 2023 and completed a master's in fashion merchandising from LIM in New York in 2024. Her passion lies in creating exceptional customer experiences through thoughtful store setup, lighting, scents, and music, though as a small business owner she manages merchandising, sales, customer service, training, and hiring. McFerren attributes her success to her community and family support, as well as her faith, which guides both her business and personal life. She values integrity, honesty, kindness, loyalty, and strong customer service, qualities she seeks in her team. On the side, she mentors high school girls. McFerren advises young women entering the industry not to let others underestimate them, noting that her background from elsewhere gives her a unique edge. She credits advice from her father, a fellow business owner, to keep going through setbacks as key to differentiating herself. Currently operating for four months, she sees challenges in building name recognition amid economic changes and shifting customer trends, but views Huntsville's lack of shopping options as offering endless opportunities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Madison

01What do you attribute your success to?

A lot of it is my community. I think most of it actually is my community. I think if my family didn't believe in me the way that they did, or support me, or pushed me the way that they did, then I would not be in this position, but leading back to my faith, just this has been a passion of mine forever, and I know that the Lord's placed that on my heart to fulfill my purpose. So, community and the Lord.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't Stop, Just Keep Going. My dad, on a daily basis, he's a business owner as well, so he helps me a lot. He's like, Madison, you just gotta keep going. It's not gonna be easy at first. You're going to hit setbacks, but you just have to keep going, because that's what's going to differentiate you from anyone else, because most people stop.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think just don't let anyone underestimate you, because I did build this from the ground up. I had a lot of men in the area helping me get set up, and they did underestimate me unfortunately. But because I'm from somewhere else, I bring a different edge to the table that a lot of the stores in the area don't.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

With a boutique, the economy changes everything, and starting up a new business. I've been operating for 4 months now, so the biggest challenge right now is just getting their name out there, but also understanding the customer themselves, because customers are always changing, trends are always changing. In Huntsville, Alabama, there is no shopping, so there are endless opportunities here.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My faith is a big role, not only in my business, but also in my personal life, just trusting that the Lord has got me, and He's gonna provide when necessary, but also customer service, kindness, loyalty, honesty, integrity. Integrity's a big one. Things like that that I look for in the girls that I hire.
