Her Story
About Madison
I've been working in the policy and political advocacy field for about 2 to 3 years. My career has included working with the Transportation Advocacy Group, a nonprofit in Houston that supports transportation initiatives in the city. I also gained experience working in a law firm where I focused on personal injury and criminal law. Most recently, I worked as a congressional intern with Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, where my responsibilities included collecting policy information and legislation information, doing work for the congressman and his staffers, and conducting policy research. I also did policy research through my university. My work typically involves a lot of policy and political research combined with administrative work. I'm graduating in December with a Bachelor's in Political Science and a minor in policy leadership from the Hobby School of Public Affairs, which has been instrumental in helping me get out there and gain all of the professional experience I've had. Recently, I received a volunteer medal from my university for dedicating over 100 hours of volunteer service, which was a meaningful achievement for me.

01What do you attribute your success to?
A lot of my success comes down to hard work and advocating for others. But I also have to say that other people helping me out along the way has been huge. I think a lot of support from other people has really helped my success. It's not just about what I've done on my own, but the people who have been there to support me throughout my journey.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just put yourself out there and do everything you can to broaden your circle and your network. Knowing people and being connected with people is a big part of making change, I think. Building those relationships and connections is really important in this field.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
A lot of changes are happening in politics and policy every single day that we haven't seen before, or haven't seen in a long time. With that just comes a lot of change for every organization, or every policy side of the United States, trying to figure out how to change with these changes that we're seeing with this administration. I think trying to be flexible and adaptive is really important right now.
