Her Story
About Maggie
I've always had a business mind - that's how I grew up, that was the environment I was raised in. During my graduate program at Southeastern University where I earned my MBA, I worked as a marketing researcher for one of my favorite professors ever, a marketing professor. We worked very closely together on the AACSB accreditation process for business standards, going through all the requirements and working with students to earn that accreditation, which happened after I graduated. After that, I worked as an analyst for a couple years at global companies like LexisNexis and Mars, where I was a global business intelligence analyst for a year. Then I switched over to transportation at CSX, one of the biggest Class 1 railroads in the country. I took a market manager position there and I've been with them for the past 4 years, working with pricing primarily - moving containers across the network, pricing contracts for both local moves and intercontinental moves. I'm currently pursuing my PhD in marketing because I'm very invested in the marketing world. I love getting creative - I really think it's the creative side of business. I've always loved putting things together and understanding consumer behavior, different areas of marketing, pricing strategies, and looking at market competition. I've been very passionate about those fields from very early on, and I've been fortunate to have the opportunities to expand that interest.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Maggie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my family - my husband, my mom, my kids, my siblings. They've all been part of my journey. They're my rock for everything. The reason why I do what I do, the reason why I have my motivation every single day, it's them. I couldn't do it without them.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to be strict about your goal, but be flexible about your strategy. I know the goal - I know what I want to achieve - and I know that I'm going to achieve my goal, but I'm sure there's going to be obstacles along the way, different ideas, different inspirations. So I keep an open mind and stay flexible about my strategy to achieve the goals that I want. Always have an open mind to pivot.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just get started. That's the best advice I could give. People sit and think about it - how do I do this? How do I do that? But just take that leap of faith and just get started, and the rest will figure itself out.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Women really are superheroes. I truly believe that. Not only are they businesswomen, but they're also mothers, friends, and daughters. I just love when women support each other. That really motivates, uplifts, and gives that best energy for women to really uplift each other and support each other, because it's not easy, especially as a woman. Having that support system really is key.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I've always been a family-first type of person. I am a true believer of God, and my family is everything to me. Having that purpose, having somebody to lean on when you need a shoulder to cry on, to laugh with, to present to - I think family is everything, and that leads to success. That leads to being the best person someone can be. It's by having that strong support system. In my work life, I value balancing and prioritizing. I'm a mom with two little babies, so I'm trying to prioritize and focus on time management, just trying to keep it all together when everything feels like it's falling apart. One day at a time.
