Her Story

About Maghen

I've been working in Medicare insurance for about 5 years, and my main responsibility is reviewing Medicare denials and trying to get those denials paid. When Medicare insurance denies a claim, I do the research and work to get the claim paid for the patient. I earned my associate's degree in science in 2018, which I consider my most notable professional achievement. What I love about this field is that there are so many different types of positions you can pursue with experience in Medicare or Medicaid. There are countless leveling up opportunities, and I believe if you get your foot in the door and keep making your way up, you'll climb high. The biggest challenges we face right now are getting contracts renewed or having contracts up to date, which causes a lot more denials for us to try to figure out. Sometimes I feel like we're on a wild goose chase trying to get claims paid because the payer themselves have not gotten their contract up to date. But despite the challenges, the opportunities in this field are tremendous.

Ten minutes with Maghen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my daughter and my husband, because they have motivated me and pushed me to work harder and go for my higher goals. They are the driving force behind everything I do and the reason I keep striving to achieve more in my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to never be afraid to aim higher than how you feel. If you feel like you're not able, or you're not gonna qualify for a promotion, just aim for it and go for it anyway. Don't let self-doubt hold you back from pursuing opportunities that might seem out of reach.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise them to keep going, even though it is tough and hard. Don't be afraid to go for your promotion. Don't be afraid to go for certain certifications. Keep climbing up the ladder. There are so many opportunities in this field if you're willing to work for them and push yourself forward.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Some of the biggest challenges are getting contracts renewed or having contracts up to date, which causes a lot more denials for us to try to figure out. I feel like we're on a wild goose chase trying to get claims paid because the payer themselves have not gotten their contract up to date. But there are also lots of opportunities. There are so many different types of positions you can do with getting experience and working with Medicare or Medicaid. There are so many different leveling up opportunities, so I figure if you get your foot in the door and make your way up, you'll climb high.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value trust, being able to trust coworkers and other employees and people outside of work life. Loyalty is also very important to me. I also value good leadership, both in myself and in the people I work with. These values guide how I approach both my professional responsibilities and my personal relationships.
