Mahalakshmi Lakshminarayanan is the founder of Flourish With Maha, a health coaching practice based in San Jose, California, dedicated to helping individuals improve their well-being through personalized, science-informed lifestyle strategies. She founded the company in October 2025 following a meaningful career pivot inspired by her own health journey. Maha holds a master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from India and a second master’s degree in molecular biology from San José State University. Early in her career, she worked in Parkinson’s disease research before stepping away from the laboratory to raise her two sons. When her children began school, Maha transitioned into education and spent several years teaching in both public and private schools. Although she was later offered the opportunity to become a full-time teacher, she had recently discovered the field of health coaching and felt called to pursue a different path. Having navigated her own autoimmune health challenges with limited guidance, she realized she could combine her scientific background and personal experience to support others facing similar struggles. That experience ultimately shaped her mission to empower individuals with knowledge and practical tools to better understand and manage their health. Through Flourish With Maha, Maha designs customized health programs that focus on gut health, autoimmune support, and women’s health, particularly during perimenopause. She offers group coaching programs, educational weekend Zoom sessions, and in-depth one-on-one consultations to help clients develop personalized wellness strategies. In addition to her coaching work, she hosts workshops in libraries and community spaces on topics such as optimizing gut health and organizes small support gatherings in her home where women can connect and share their experiences. Maha is especially passionate about translating complex scientific research into clear, accessible information that empowers people to take an active role in improving their health and quality of life.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

As a health coach, I attribute much of my success to my own personal health journey. Living with an autoimmune condition wasn’t always easy—it could feel challenging and sometimes isolating—but it gave me a deep understanding of what many people experience when they’re searching for answers about their health. That experience is what fuels my passion for helping others feel supported and empowered on their own path.

My academic background in biochemistry and molecular biology allows me to look closely at scientific research and turn complex information into practical, easy-to-understand guidance that clients can actually use in their daily lives. Just as important, though, is the way I work with people. I believe in truly listening, meeting each person where they are, and offering encouragement, empathy, and steady support as they move forward in their health journey.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned throughout my career is to follow the work that genuinely resonates with my purpose. There have been moments when more traditional or predictable career paths were available, but choosing to pursue work that aligned with my passion for helping others ultimately led me to health coaching. That experience reinforced the importance of trusting your instincts and allowing your interests and experiences to guide your professional direction.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to actively seek out and build strong communities with other women. Collaboration and mutual support are incredibly powerful, especially in wellness and health-focused professions. Sharing knowledge, experiences, and encouragement helps everyone grow and creates a stronger network of professionals who are working toward similar goals.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the health and wellness space is that many clinicians simply do not have enough time to spend with patients to fully explore lifestyle factors, education, and preventative care. There can also be stigma or confusion around certain treatment options, and many individuals—especially those dealing with autoimmune conditions—do not receive adequate early guidance or support. At the same time, there are tremendous opportunities to raise awareness about areas such as gut health and preventative wellness. Group coaching programs, educational workshops, and accessible interpretations of scientific research can empower people to take a more active role in managing their health.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life include community, empathy, and a commitment to service. I believe deeply in listening to people and creating supportive spaces where individuals feel heard and understood. I also value evidence-informed practice, ensuring that the guidance I provide is grounded in research while still being practical and accessible for everyday life. Ultimately, my goal is to help people feel supported, informed, and empowered in their health journeys.
