Mahalakshmi Nagarajan is a cybersecurity professional and Advisory Senior Consultant at Deloitte, where she has built her career since joining the organization in 2019. With approximately eight years of experience in the cybersecurity and identity management field, she specializes primarily in Identity and Access Management (IAM), while also supporting governance, access certification, and related security responsibilities for a range of clients. In her role, she combines technical expertise with client-focused consulting to help organizations strengthen their access controls, manage identity-related risks, and implement effective security practices.
Throughout her career, Nagarajan has developed strong expertise in enterprise identity and access management, including platforms such as SailPoint and Saviynt. She currently manages a team of 17 professionals, providing day-to-day leadership, coordinating responsibilities, supporting team development, and ensuring consistent, high-quality delivery to clients. Her contributions have been recognized through multiple Thank It Forward rewards and employee recognition awards, reflecting her commitment to excellence, collaboration, and client success. She continues to expand her capabilities through professional training, including specialized learning in SailPoint and AWS, while staying current with the evolving cybersecurity landscape.
Nagarajan's educational foundation began with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science in India, followed by graduate studies in the United States, where she earned master's degrees in Computer Science and Computer and Information Science and Cyber Security. Her professional journey reflects a strong commitment to continuous learning, leadership, and technical excellence. She attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her family, particularly her husband and parents, who have encouraged her professional growth while helping her navigate the demands of a challenging career and family life. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to the unwavering support of my family. My husband, my parents, and my loved ones have consistently encouraged me and supported me in every way they can. Even though my parents live in India, they continue to make the effort to be present, take on responsibilities, and help whenever needed. My husband has also been incredibly supportive, willingly stepping in and taking on responsibilities whenever my professional commitments require my time and attention. Their encouragement, understanding, and willingness to support me have played an important role in enabling me to pursue my goals and continue growing professionally.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received came from my first mate, Diakar: always respect the time frame you are given, stay focused, and give your very best effort to deliver high-quality work the first time. When you approach your responsibilities with discipline and focus, you build trust, minimize the need for repeated corrections, and demonstrate that you can be relied upon. I have carried this advice throughout my career because I believe that focus, consistency, and a commitment to excellence are fundamental keys to professional success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay focused, understand the demands of the profession, and make a commitment to continuous learning. Early in your career, take every opportunity to explore different areas, gain diverse experiences, and develop skills that will strengthen your expertise and confidence. I also encourage women to invest in their professional growth and build a strong foundation for themselves while they have the flexibility to do so. As life evolves and family responsibilities become part of the journey, having that foundation can make it easier to successfully balance both personal and professional commitments. Most importantly, remain curious, embrace opportunities to grow, and never stop looking for ways to expand your knowledge and capabilities.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is the unpredictable nature of the work schedule. There are times when responsibilities extend well beyond regular working hours, sometimes until 7 p.m. or later, which can make maintaining a healthy balance between professional and personal life challenging. As a mother of a toddler, I value being present for my child, and there are moments when work commitments make it difficult to be there when he needs me, particularly when both my husband and I are in meetings. While these situations can feel challenging and overwhelming at times, they have also reinforced for me the importance of flexibility, prioritization, and finding sustainable ways to balance a demanding career with family responsibilities.
