About Maham
Maham Munawar is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She has worked as an ER physician since 2019, with expertise in emergency medicine and global health. Her background includes a fellowship and public health degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, which provided her global health training. In addition to her clinical work at adult and children's facilities, she teaches residents and has spent three years teaching emergency medicine in Pakistan, connecting with her family's cultural origins. She is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Munawar serves as co-chair of the wellness department at Baylor, working to create equitable and circadian rhythm friendly schedules. She has received a Teaching Excellence Award in 2022 along with professionalism, excellence, and leadership awards during residency and medical school. She attributes her success to mentors who provide problem-solving support and emotional validation, and she advises young women to seek at least two mentors, one immediately ahead and one further along in their career.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My mentors have been essential to my success. They help problem-solve issues based on their experience, and provide a sense of camaraderie and emotional validation, like hey, I've been through this too, and you can get through it.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be on the lookout for mentors. Have at least two mentors that you trust and look up to: one that's right immediately in front of you (one year ahead), and one that's later in your career.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Wellness in emergency medicine and medicine in general. Taking care of physicians is often at the end of priorities. I'm the co-chair of the wellness department at Baylor emergency medicine, helping with equitable and circadian rhythm friendly schedules so physicians can have a life outside of medicine.
