Her Story

About Mai

Mai Kamiyama is the Founder and Owner of Hachiko House, LLC, a boutique dog daycare and boarding business that she has operated for nearly two years. The business specializes in providing care for nervous, shy, and rescue dogs that may have been rejected from other facilities. She oversees daily operations, client relationships, and business development with a focus on trust, safety, and individualized care. Prior to starting her business, she volunteered for several years with Korean canine rescue in New York, serving as a volunteer screener and learning about training rescue dogs. She also worked part-time as a dog handler and groomer's assistant at a doggy daycare in New York while holding a full-time job. After her full-time job closed during COVID, she worked for one and a half years in a supplier onboarding role before pursuing her passion for animal care full-time. Mai holds an associate degree from Monroe Community College and a certification in dog behavior problem and solution, which she obtained during COVID. She graduated high school one year later than her peers due to work obligations.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure you do something you love to do because if you are not, that's not gonna go too far. Believe in yourself. There's a lot of struggles and you're gonna hit the rock bottom one day but just hang on tight. There will be a good future when you're hanging tight and just trust in yourself. And treat people nicely because you never know who will help you.
