Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my mom, who is a single mother and poured so much into me when I was younger to help me become a successful adult. I believe it has a lot to do with the way I was raised. I am a hard worker and very passionate about everything I do - I put my whole heart into it. I don't do something if I don't like it. I try to make sure everything that I do is meaningful. If I'm here in the healthcare field, there's a reason for it. I'm here to help patients go through anything that they have to go through. It doesn't matter if I have to be with them and help them fill out applications, or help them call the insurance, or help them pay a bill - I don't care as long as I'm doing something that is helping someone else. It's just my dedication, I would say.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say the same thing that I say to my 13-year-old daughter: it doesn't matter what people tell you, doesn't matter what I tell you - if you have a dream, just go for it. My daughter is currently at a dance academy and dreams of becoming a Broadway actress. Sometimes I tell her, 'Hey, that's not gonna pay your bills, you need to go to school and study something else,' but then I go back and say, 'You know what? Just follow your dream. If that's your dream, it doesn't matter what it takes, you go and you get it done.' You've got to do something that is rewarding, that you're gonna feel happy about. It's bad enough we all have to work, but it's even worse if we have to work on something that you don't like. You have to be passionate about the line of job that you want to do, and just don't stop, and just believe that you can do it.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I see in the healthcare field is that it's become more centralized on what the insurance is covering instead of what the patient needs or listening to what they're asking for. It's become more about numbers instead of individual care for the patient. It's very hard. For example, my husband has Crohn's disease, and the medications used for Crohn's are new and cost a lot of money. Having to deal with the insurance - whether they cover it or not, how much we have to pay or copay - makes everything complicated when it should be something so easy: we found a treatment, let's try to get you treated so you could have a better life. A lot of patients go through that. Now, with the changes with insulin too, a lot of insulins are no longer covered by patients' plans, and that's something that is important because the patient could go to the hospital because of that. For me, it's very difficult because healthcare is not taking care of the patient as a human being, as an individual. They're looking just at a number, or potential bill, or how much revenue you're getting from that person, which it shouldn't be.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In my professional life, I value accountability, teamwork, and a shared commitment to patient-centered care. It is important to me to work alongside individuals who are dedicated to making a real difference, not just collecting a paycheck. In my personal life, I value peace, love, and spending quality time with my family, as they are my greatest source of strength and fulfillment.
