Her Story

About Majel

Majel Wells has been in marketing and communications since 2010 and has focused on higher education communications since 2015. She earned a bachelor's degree, becoming the first in her family to graduate college, after a non-traditional path that included leading a local farmer's market and working at a printing company. Her primary professional focus is internal communications on campus, where she values trust, transparency, and personal connections with clients. Outside her role, Majel owns the Hawthorne Half Day Relay and Ultra race, which she purchased five years ago, and she has served 15 years on the board of the Wabash Valley Roadrunners nonprofit running club, earning the Member of the Year Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. She also acts as race director for the Griffin Bike Park anniversary event and runs the Backyard Ultra to support New Shoe Day, which provides shoes to those in need. Majel attributes her success to hard work, consistency, and focus, with her husband playing a significant role, and she advises young women to identify not only their passions but the reasons behind them.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Majel

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, consistency, and focus. I contribute anything of my success really to hard work and being consistent, just staying consistent and focused. And I think through that you can really learn anything. My husband's a huge part of my success too.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say think about what you're most passionate about right now, and not just what it is, but why. Because we can be passionate about things, but really the passion isn't always the thing that we're doing, it's the reason we're doing it. Think about the reason why you become passionate about something that you're willing to commit your time, your energy. And then I think if you follow that, you'll fall right into where you need to be.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Trust and transparency are really important to me whenever I'm working with my campus clients because I want them to be able to know that they can give me all of the information and trust to relay that information appropriately. Connection is also key - I really strive for personal relationships to feel connected to people that I work with so we can have that open, respectful communication that's needed to tell the story and complete and accomplish the goals that we're all out to accomplish together.
