Ten minutes with Makayla
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous growth. I believe in showing up consistently, keeping my word, and staying dedicated even during challenging moments. I’m naturally curious and value understanding people on a deeper level, which allows me to build strong relationships and create meaningful solutions. I also believe that kindness, professionalism, and staying calm under pressure make a lasting impact, because people perform at their best when they feel respected and supported.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to “control the controllables.” That mindset taught me to focus on the things I can directly influence, like my effort, attitude, preparation, and consistency, instead of wasting energy on things outside of my control. I’ve found that when I stay focused on those fundamentals, good things tend to follow.
Another important lesson I’ve learned is that mistakes are okay because they’re part of growth. What matters most is how you respond to them. I believe it’s more productive to put energy into fixing a mistake and learning from it rather than over-explaining it. Accountability, adaptability, and a willingness to improve are some of the biggest drivers of personal and professional growth.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to trust that you belong, even while you’re still learning. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, because growth comes from being willing to learn and staying curious. I also think it’s important to find a few people you can be honest with, whether that’s mentors, leaders, or peers who will support you through challenging moments and give you honest guidance when you need it.
It’s also important to remember that making mistakes is okay. If you make one, own it, learn from it, fix it, and move forward without dwelling on it. Growth comes from experience, and confidence is built through overcoming challenges. Most importantly, don’t limit yourself by staying inside your comfort zone just because you’re nervous. Some of the best opportunities for growth come from saying yes to new experiences, even before you feel completely ready.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in healthcare staffing is that the industry is constantly evolving. There are so many moving pieces, from workforce demands and facility needs to industry changes and shifting priorities, so staying adaptable and informed is incredibly important. It can be challenging to keep up with everything while also ensuring organizations receive the support and solutions they need.
At the same time, that constant change also creates opportunity. Healthcare is an industry where there will always be a need for strong partnerships, problem-solving, and reliable support systems. What I appreciate most is knowing that the work being done ultimately helps people at every level, from supporting healthcare organizations to helping professionals find opportunities where they can succeed and make an impact.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are kindness, growth, and transparency. I believe people should be able to count on you, so I always try to lead with honesty, consistency, and respect in every interaction. I also try to leave situations and relationships better than I found them by bringing a positive attitude and genuine care for others.
Growth is another value that’s very important to me. I’m committed to continuously learning, not only in my career but also about myself as a person. I believe there’s always room to improve, and staying open to feedback, new experiences, and different perspectives is what helps both personally and professionally.
