Her Story
About Makayla
Makayla Tolbert has been active in cybersecurity for nearly two years, currently serving as an intern in IT and technology. She earned her high school diploma on time with a B average and is pursuing an associate's degree in science from Chattahoochee Tech. Tolbert developed an interest in technology, including how computers work, malware, and protecting systems from hackers, after being inspired by a colleague while working as a sales representative. She attributes her success primarily to her parents, especially her mother, whose support helped her navigate challenges after becoming a mother at a young age. Tolbert values honesty and loyalty above all. She advises young women entering the field to always be themselves, never give up, and view trying again as progress rather than a setback. Her main professional challenge is transitioning from an intern role to a full-time position in IT amid increasing competition from those following trends rather than genuine interest.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Makayla
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success mostly to my parents, especially my mother. Even though she was disappointed when I had a daughter at a young age, her true mother's love stuck around and supported me through everything.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always be yourself no matter the obstacles or what anyone tells you that you can or cannot do. Never give up, but if you do give up always try again. Don't think trying again is going backwards, it's moving you forward and you're learning something new. Starting over isn't part of my vocabulary, it's just continuing where I left off.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is getting an actual job instead of staying an intern in IT and technology. A lot of people want to get into it because it's the new trend instead of doing what they love, making it hard to break in even with experience.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value honesty and loyalty the most.
