Her Story

About Makenna

I've been doing art my entire life - it's always been one of my main focuses. Over the past two years, I've taken my passion from just doing art on the side for fun to making it a more creative, professional endeavor. My work combines photography with traditional art styles in unique ways. I take photographs and turn them into paintings, or add different elements that you can't necessarily do digitally but have to do with a traditional art style, like printing out the paper and adding embroidery to it or bedazzling it. Recently, I launched Duck Pond Creations as a full company, moving beyond word-of-mouth to establish an LLC and publish my website. I'm currently building up an art shop where I don't just do commissions, but also sell prints, stickers, and magnets. I'm also working on getting up a blog for more content related to photography and art. When I'm not working as a photographer, I teach high school classes, which allows me to have the creative flexibility during breaks while applying my business education to run my company effectively.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that the best way to get started is just to start. If you have all of these things in your mind, like, oh, I don't have a big enough portfolio, I haven't done this, I haven't done that, you're not gonna get started. I would really recommend, if you want to get into photography or art, buy a camera, buy the materials you need, and if you already have a camera, even if it's like a little digital, cheap one from the store, just use it. Find your composition, find your style, and it doesn't have to be this big, fancy, expensive thing. It can just start out with you learning, like, even if it's just your phone camera, learning the composition you like, learning the style you like, before you're able to upgrade to the camera that you want.
