Her Interview
Ten minutes with Makia
01What do you attribute your success to?
My hardships. The constant need to evolve and do better as a person keeps me driven. I come from humble beginnings, but I’ve always known my future would be bright. I’ve always taken it upon myself to go the extra mile to succeed, and I’ve knocked down every goal I’ve set.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
“Always come with a solution and not a problem.” Coming up in the business world young, I figured out quickly that I wanted to be in leadership. To become a leader, I had to think like one. Instead of always bringing questions or problems to my leaders, I learned to problem-solve and bring solutions ultimately elevating my career path.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Believe in yourself and stay grounded. It’s so easy to give up in a competitive industry, but it’s so rewarding to push through barriers. Stand out! Do the extra research, show more interest, and make connections. Networking is a form of currency.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There’s absolutely room for growth in diversity, especially in more senior level positions. That’s why I love being a part of that growth. The change you seek starts with you.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect, compassion, and ambition are the most important values to me both in work and my personal life. I always take the time to earn my respect, and I expect the same respect I give out. Compassion is also a big core value for me. I’ve met people from all different walks of life and it has inspired me and expanded my compassion towards others. One of my personal favorites is ambition. The desire to achieve is so important both in life and in the workforce and has attributed to my accomplishments.
