Her Story

About Malaney

I'm a drug discovery scientist with a background in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering. My research has been in the preclinical drug discovery and diagnostics area, and I really believe that treating disease and diagnosing disease go hand in hand. If you can diagnose it or really pin down what are the underlying mechanisms of the disease and trace that, that's how you can treat it. We need diagnostic assays to say the disease is there, but we also need them when we're developing treatments to test if our treatments are working. I did my PhD in drug discovery, a postdoc in drug discovery, and then worked more on diagnostics for a cancer research hospital in California. Right now, I work at Eurofins in Indianapolis, which is a third-party organization that supplies scientific services to the pharmaceutical industry. Here, I lead a team of 6 individuals, and we work with the pharmaceutical industry to provide technical services, helping them run their experiments in the preclinical discovery space. I'm also exploring new things in the AI space for drug discovery, which is something I'm working on on the side at the moment. I've been tutoring for about 8 years now because I really love teaching, mentorship, and education.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think, ultimately, it's a combination of my own personal motivation. I was really inspired to go into science since I was younger, when I was a kid. But if I were to really attribute my success to something, it would be the mentors that I've had along the way, and the people that believed in me, for sure. It takes a village, and we need that support system throughout our whole lives along the way.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say follow what you want, because people are always gonna try to push you towards the next hot thing. But if you're always jumping on what's hot, you're not creating your own lane. Follow your passion, because that's what's gonna lead you to where you're meant to be, and also be yourself. Don't be afraid to create a space for yourself, because there's a lot of change happening right now, and we're starting to create a more diverse scientific community, but it has historically been male-dominated and it's still very male-dominated. So that would just be my advice - don't ever shrink yourself, follow your passion, and create your own space. The right people are going to see you for who you are. If you're marching to the beat of your own drum, the right connections, the right people are gonna show up.
