Her Story

About Maleah

Maleah Frederick is an independent musician and pre-physical therapy student. She has been creating music since 2021, when she was a junior in high school. She has been studying pre-physical therapy since August 2023, when she attended Daytona State College for two years to graduate with her Associate of Arts degree in Kinesiology with a 3.7 GPA, and then transferred to the University of Central Florida to continue her bachelor's degree in Health Sciences. She recently started doing observation hours under a licensed physical therapist at the UCF Physical Therapy Clinic until mid-October. Her goal after receiving her degree is to start physical therapy school and become a licensed physical therapist. She attributes her success to having a strong sense of self, a strong belief in her abilities, using visualization for her goals, and trusting the universe. She values a strong work ethic, a strong sense of self, a strong belief that one can achieve everything sought in life, and always being open to learning new things.

Ten minutes with Maleah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having a strong sense of self, since that is number one for any field that you want to go into. Have a strong belief in your abilities. And it's also helpful to use visualization for your goals. And focus on your goals, and then detach and trust the universe that everything's going to work out.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Always stay on top of new ways to either promote your music, and for academics it's important to gain as much real-world experience as you can, whether through observation hours if you want to go into the medical field under someone who has already made a career as a physical therapist, or physician, or doctor.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The biggest advice I could give is to make sure you use all the resources that your university provides for your classes, whether it be supplemental instruction, tutoring, or graduate school advising. Even if you feel like you don't need tutoring or SI, it's always good to start going to SI and tutoring as soon as you start your class.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is staying on my toes since walking around on the University of Central Florida is a huge campus. I always make sure to have insoles with me to help support my feet since they can get sore pretty easily.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Having a strong work ethic, a strong sense of self, a strong belief that you can achieve everything you seek in life, and to always be open to learning new things.
