Her expertise further expanded into healthcare artificial intelligence training, allowing her to apply her clinical nursing knowledge to the development and training of healthcare AI systems.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Malia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to education, independence, perseverance, adaptability, and compassion. I have intentionally pursued diverse experiences within nursing, continued expanding my knowledge through education, and remained open to new opportunities, which has strengthened my expertise and made me more versatile and marketable.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received has come from professors who supported my educational journey, particularly Dr. Harding at Northern Virginia Community College. Much of my academic and professional growth has been self-directed, especially while completing online degree programs and balancing my responsibilities as a working mother.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering nursing to pursue their BSN and avoid limiting themselves to one area. Nursing offers a broad scope of practice, so I recommend staying open to new opportunities, exploring different specialties, and taking advantage of every chance to grow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The nursing job market is highly competitive, particularly for remote positions, where opportunities can fill quickly and applications are often screened by AI. Building a diverse nursing portfolio and gaining experience across multiple areas can help nurses stand out, remain adaptable, and become more marketable.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Compassion is the most important value in both my work and personal life. I strive to be a compassionate nurse regardless of the setting, whether providing care virtually, remotely, in person, or in the home.
