Ten minutes with Malisha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people who believed in me when I was struggling to believe in myself. After my release from prison, I was fortunate to have supportive programs, mentors, and educators who encouraged me, invested in my growth, and reminded me of my potential. Their guidance gave me the confidence to pursue my education and build a meaningful career dedicated to serving others. I am equally grateful for my friends, my support system, and my children, whose unwavering love and encouragement have inspired me to persevere through every challenge. Their belief in me has shaped the leader I am today and continues to motivate me to create opportunities for others seeking a second chance.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is simple: don't be afraid. I've learned that fear can prevent you from pursuing opportunities, embracing change, or realizing your full potential. The greatest growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, believing in yourself even when the path is uncertain, and having the courage to move forward despite the challenges.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to be patient with yourself and never lose sight of the reason you chose this work in the first place. Let your purpose guide you, especially during the difficult moments. This work can be emotionally challenging and, at times, heartbreaking, but it is also incredibly meaningful. Celebrate the small victories because they often have the greatest impact. Most importantly, continue believing in yourself, keep moving forward, and make your own mental, emotional, and physical well-being a priority. You can make the greatest difference in the lives of others when you also take care of yourself.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In both my work and personal life, I value integrity, accountability, and respect for others. I believe in being punctual, following through on commitments, and contributing to a safe, supportive, and non-toxic environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. I appreciate leaders who invest in their teams, foster opportunities for growth, and create workplaces where people can thrive professionally and personally. As a lifelong learner, I also place a high value on education and continuous personal development. Beyond my career, I cherish my relationships with family and friends, believe in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and strive to build meaningful connections that enrich both my personal life and my ability to serve others.
