Lead Dietitian: Scoring Philosophy
FoodHealth Company
Denver, CO 80206

Mallory Bobzien, MS, RD, LD, is a registered dietitian and co-creator of the FoodHealth Score, a pioneering system designed to make healthy eating simple and culturally inclusive. Passionate about nutrition transparency, Mallory believes that everyone should feel empowered to make informed choices for their own health. Her work bridges science and practicality, helping consumers understand how foods impact overall wellness while promoting dietary practices grounded in disease prevention rather than calorie counting. With nearly five years at FoodHealth Co. (formerly Bitewell), Mallory has led the development of the company’s proprietary FoodHealth Score algorithm, a 1-to-100 system inspired by the Mediterranean diet that rates foods based on their health benefits. She has also contributed to the company’s outreach and marketing efforts, partnered with major retailers like Kroger and Hy-Vee, and recently helped launch the FoodHealth Score Chrome extension, guiding shoppers toward healthier options. Beyond her work with the algorithm, Mallory serves as a student mentor on the board of Fork Friendly, a nonprofit focused on making healthy living accessible through practical, free resources. In addition to her work with FoodHealth Co. and Fork Friendly, she has recently returned to the bedrock of dietetics, counseling patients 1-on-1 with Privia Health's Virtual Nutrition Clinic. Outside of her professional achievements, Mallory is deeply engaged with Latin culture and language, having studied abroad in Costa Rica and lived in Spain. She channels her passion for culture into salsa dancing, performing nationally with an adult dance team, and enjoys exploring how food traditions connect communities around the world. Her professional focus on evidence-based, preventative nutrition and her personal dedication to cultural appreciation combine to make her a leader in both health innovation and community engagement.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of opportunity and support. I was fortunate to be introduced to Food Health Co. following my internship—truly a stroke of luck. I’ve also benefited immensely from strong mentorship, including guidance from my mom, my mentor and Fork Friendly founder Linda Kapusniak, and FoodHealth Co.'s Co-Founder & CEO Sam Citro Alexander. Additionally, I prioritize self-care and pursue interests outside of work that help me bring my best performance to every professional endeavor.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from my mother: “Take a job you’re not qualified for.” She has always made me feel like the world is truly my oyster and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone—whether that meant studying abroad, exploring new experiences, or embracing the adventurous side of my personality. I’ve also been fortunate to learn from incredible mentors. Linda Kapusniak has been a guiding force, mentoring multiple students at a time with wisdom and dedication. And working alongside Sam Citro Alexander, Co-Founder & CEO of FoodHealth Co., for the past five years has been transformative—Sam is a true force of nature: poised, impactful, and radiating confidence, inspiring me to lead with both strength and grace.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For young women entering the nutrition and dietetics field, my advice is simple: the opportunities are far broader than you might think. Anywhere there’s food, there’s a role for dietitians—beyond hospitals, you can explore careers in industry, retail, tech, and hospitality.

It’s also essential to stay curious and continue building your skills. Embrace technology, learn practical tools, and explore coding—these skills can help bring your ideas to life and accelerate innovation in your work. Networking, ongoing education, and being open to new experiences will expand your horizons and help you find the path that’s right for you. Truly, the sky is the limit, and the world is your oyster.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field right now is developing centralized, user-friendly consumer tools—like the FoodHealth Score—that help support patients navigate the world of nutrition on their own. Post-COVID care and the Make America Healthy Again movement have brought a spotlight to diet as a key force in health. Registered dietitians sit at the intersection of science and behavior change -- exactly where both the private and public sector are investing.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me in both my work and personal life are evidence-based practice, a focus on preventative care, and helping patients find practical, sustainable solutions. I also prioritize balance, making time for hobbies and routines that support my well-being, such as journaling, joyful fitness, and ample time with the people I love.
