Her Story

About Marcela

My career in luxury retail spans 23 years, beginning in San Francisco as a sales associate at Bang & Olufsen, a Danish luxury audio and video brand serving high-profile clients. I worked my way up to store manager and eventually oversaw operations for 5 stores in the Bay Area over about 8 years. When the company acquired the Goyard franchise, I had the incredible opportunity to help launch the first freestanding Goyard boutique in the U.S., outside of Paris. Without traditional advertising or marketing allowed by the French luxury company, I learned to network, create partnerships, and present the brand strategically. I'm proud that I grew that store from barely $5 million to almost $9 million in revenue over 6-7 years. After taking time to focus on my teenage daughter, I discovered boxing, which became a passion that changed my life. I've worked with several luxury brands including Wolford, an Austrian B Corp specializing in lingerie and ready-to-wear, where I experienced my first all-women company globally and fell in love with the sustainability aspect. When COVID closed that San Francisco store permanently, I decided to relocate to Texas for better opportunities and a more relaxed lifestyle. After exploring Fort Worth and working with Luxottica and other boutiques, I found my current home at Gani, a Danish B Corp brand on South Congress in Austin. For the past 10 months, I've been managing this beautiful boutique where I handle everything from operations and team leadership to partnerships and community events. I'm passionate about creating an inclusive, community-oriented environment that reflects the special character of South Congress. On days I'm not at the boutique, I work as a boxing coach with private clients. I hold a master's degree in psychology from Mexico City, and I grew up in a small city in Mexico, never imagining I'd travel the world working with luxury brands.

Ten minutes with Marcela

01What do you attribute your success to?

I feel the ability to have created so many meaningful relationships is what I attribute my success to. Not only with clients, but just with people throughout my career - whether it's another store manager or anyone else. I think at this point, I'm good at and I really enjoy real, real connection. I've been able to build these genuine relationships with my peers, with my team, with my clients, and with different brands, and I think that's the most successful part of my business.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t be afraid to try new paths and never give up

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep going, everything always works out one way or another

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I care a lot about sustainability and working for B Corp companies. I'm drawn to brands that are women-led and empowering - my experience at Wolford was my first at an all-women company globally, from Italy to France to Brazil, and that really inspired me to try to work for companies that are women in power or where the majority of people are women. I also value community and inclusivity - I always try to create events that are community-oriented and inclusive, just like the brand itself. Even though I work for a global brand, I make sure it feels like a community, because South Congress is a very special place and I know a lot of people there. I want to create real, genuine connections with everyone I work with.
