Her Interview

Ten minutes with Marcia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I love learning. I've wanted to be in law since junior high school. I didn't get a JD because I started a family. I love the support role and being a valuable contributor. I'm a nurturer by nature. I'm also a pastoral counselor. I believe in correcting privately and praising publicly because it builds respect and lifts people up.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Do what you love. I have dabbled in other areas that would have been more lucrative but it's not what I love. Learn something new every day. Respect people regardless of status, which allows communication up and down without disrespect.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't doubt yourself. Do not doubt your ability. You have something valuable to contribute. Do not focus on your weaknesses. Focus on your strengths. Someone will help you with your weaknesses, but no one's gonna help you with your strengths. Develop your strengths.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is maintaining structure and organization. Conflicts requires a certain structure. Keeping everybody on the same structure, whether it's my team, attorneys, or the client. We have to maintain it for others and for ourselves. Stay on top of processes and make sure everybody's aware of changes.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Respect is definitely key. Respect everybody. Encourage questions and their desire for knowledge. Respect and ethical conduct. The same person you are at the office should be the same person I see in the supermarket. Be consistent in who you are.
