Earlier in her career, she served as Communications Director for the USO of North Carolina and worked in public relations and strategic communications consulting, building a strong reputation for mission-driven storytelling, brand strategy, and stakeholder engagement.

A graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications and Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Margaret combines expertise in public relations, marketing, and nonprofit leadership with a passion for service. Her Interview

Ten minutes with Margaret

01What do you attribute your success to?

My family really supported me throughout my journey. They told me I could do anything that I wanted to do. They encouraged me every step of the way and they never said you can't do that. Second, I'm not a person who's willing to give up. I'm not the smartest person in the room on any topic, but I am someone who's just willing to pick it up and try my best, and I think that's really gotten me to where I am today.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You can do anything that you put your mind to, if you're willing to work hard and put in that effort. As a woman in leadership, you can also support other women by creating an environment for them. Try to lead by example and pay it forward to the folks that they eventually come to lead.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I've always been in a male-dominated field a little bit, not necessarily marketing but in the military veteran community, and I just kind of never let that stop me. A lot of women see that as a challenge but I think it's also an opportunity for you to stand out among the crowd and to pave your own way. The changing world with AI in the marketing industry and nonprofit industry is changing, which will be a challenge but early adopters will be the people that are successful.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My core values are really around kindness and gratitude. In leadership it's easy to kind of set to the side, but the best leaders I've had are the ones who work from those two areas. If you come from the place of gratitude and kindness, you really get a lot more done and your people follow you. Those are my two core values in work and in my personal life, in parenting as well.
