Margaret South is an accomplished editor, writing coach, and ghostwriter with a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades. She founded All Girl Productions alongside Bette Midler and Bonnie Bruckheimer, where she developed feature film projects for major studios and networks including Disney, Fox, Tri-Star Studios, HBO, ABC, and NBC. Among her notable credits is the beloved film Beaches, and she co-wrote the Disney screenplay A View from a Broad with Ms. Midler, further solidifying her reputation as a powerful creative voice in film and storytelling.

Beyond her work in entertainment, Margaret is deeply committed to education and writer development. She created the innovative Kids Talk Story curriculum, which has been implemented in public schools to foster storytelling and communication skills at an early age. She is a sought-after speaker and educator, having presented at prestigious events such as the Crossroads Writers’ Conference, Maui/Hawaii Writers’ Conference, Women in Film Convention, American Pen Women, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Currently, Margaret serves as a Writing Consultant and Teacher with Story Summit, where she develops curriculum, mentors writers, reviews screenplays and books, and supports publishing initiatives through All Girl Publishing. A graduate of Ithaca College with a BFA in Speech and Theatre, and with additional studies at UCLA, she brings both academic rigor and real-world industry insight to her work. Known for her collaborative approach and deep respect for each writer’s voice, Margaret South continues to help writers at all levels shape stories that are authentic, compelling, and ready for publication or production.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the help of many friends and mentors. People helped me. Now, I help other women tell their stories.

Play nice and keep going.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Family, family, family.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

AI has wiped out many editing jobs. Streaming services have affected the movie business. The Pacific Palisades fire devastated the town. But again, just keep going.

Family.
