About Maria
Maria Amaya is a Clinical Therapist, Social Worker, and Program Manager with over 30 years of experience in her field. Based in Eastvale, California, she earned her master's degree from USC and her doctorate from Capella University. Amaya's work encompasses trauma-informed care for clients ranging from young children to seniors, court-mandated services through Child and Family Services, and direct involvement in the California prison system, which began on a volunteer basis. She also directs efforts with New Haven Homes, a program providing housing, life skills training, and support for young women aging out of foster care between ages 18 and 21. Fluent in Spanish, Amaya maintains a primary focus on therapy, including both in-office and telehealth sessions, while emphasizing the importance of addressing broken systems, maintaining integrity, and applying a non-judgmental moral compass in her practice. She attributes her success to recognizing that consistent support for those at a deficit can make a meaningful difference, a principle that has guided her career across California, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Maria
01What do you attribute your success to?
I really understood that what I could do, whatever I had, that I could help. It wasn't about me, it was just whatever I got to learn that maybe giving my consistent time to someone who was at a deficit would make a difference. And then it just built on that. I love what I do.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Pay attention to what's going on in their community. Really remember what is your deepest held belief, and what is precious to your heart. Because it's hard work, it's very, very demanding, so you want to do something that is going to matter to you.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The broken systems that we have to face. If we don't recognize that and know that is something we have to work with, you're never going to be able to be successful in your work.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity and moral compass. Ethically and morally look at each client through the right lens, the correct lens, and not judgmental. Honesty.
