Her Story
About Maria
Maria Berrio serves as a community outreach manager at a nonprofit organization, where she has worked for 10 years connecting Spanish-speaking families, particularly those with young children, to essential public services including SNAP, Medicare, food access, health, and education. Her role involves helping families set realistic goals, placing children in affordable daycare, and supporting mothers in returning to the workforce after having kids. Berrio's path into this field was motivated by observing the challenges parents face with reliable and affordable childcare, leading her to assist in establishing daycares and providing resources. She holds a master's degree in administration from Colombia, obtained in 1997, and an associate degree in human services, complemented by certifications in community health work, public speaking, CPR, and legal translations. As a bilingual professional fluent in English and Spanish, she leverages her language skills to bridge gaps in awareness of available community services. Additionally, Berrio operates a side venture offering translation and mobile notary services for legal documents.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It has to be the most important part of this field is to try to walk a little bit in the other person's shoes. Be a good listener and sympathize with the idea of what people is going through. If it never happened to you, it doesn't mean that it's happening to other people. Have a good knowledge and educate yourself on the services that are available.
