Her Story

About Maria Fernanda Chen

My interest in the medical field began through pre-college programs at Harvard Medical School, which inspired my passion for public health and research. I earned my Bachelor of Integrative Science from Pennsylvania State University (2020–2024), where I also completed minors in Psychology, Human Development and Family Studies, and Spanish Literature, along with certifications in Marketing and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals.

Over the past six years, I have gained research experience across multiple disciplines, including psychology, human development and family studies, and clinical research. Following graduation, I spent eight months working at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Washington, D.C., before transitioning into my current role as a Breast Cancer Research Coordinator. This position has been one of the most meaningful milestones in my career, as it allows me to contribute to research that impacts the lives of countless patients and families. I have served in this role for over a year and continue to expand my research expertise.

I am currently pursuing a Master of Public Health at the University of Miami, with an expected graduation date of Fall 2026, and I am preparing to begin a PhD program in 2027. In addition, I am starting a new research role focused on cancer-related viruses and have recently completed the proposal for this project.

Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, I am a lifelong equestrian and have been riding horses since the age of ten. I also practice boxing, which has strengthened my discipline, resilience, and perseverance. Outside of research and athletics, I have a strong passion for writing and enjoy working on books and creative projects in my free time.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Maria Fernanda Chen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities even when they seem intimidating. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have balanced multiple responsibilities while continuously seeking experiences that challenge me to grow. I believe that success comes from staying committed to your goals, remaining adaptable, and never being afraid to ask questions or learn from others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to never let fear of being unprepared stop me from pursuing an opportunity. Growth happens outside of your comfort zone, and you do not need to know everything before taking the next step. Many of the opportunities that shaped my career—from research positions to leadership roles—came from being willing to learn along the way.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Believe that you belong in every room you enter. Do not underestimate your abilities or wait until you feel "ready" to pursue opportunities. Build strong relationships with mentors, ask questions, seek out experiences that challenge you, and remember that your perspective is valuable. Your career does not need to follow a perfect path; sometimes the most rewarding opportunities come from unexpected directions.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in public health and medical research is the increasing ability to use data, technology, and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve health outcomes. Advances in cancer research, infectious disease prevention, and personalized medicine have the potential to transform patient care. At the same time, challenges remain in addressing health disparities, improving access to healthcare, and ensuring that research findings reach and benefit diverse populations.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, compassion, resilience, and lifelong learning are the values that guide me most. I believe in treating others with respect and empathy, maintaining high ethical standards in research and professional work, and continuously seeking knowledge and growth. Personally, I value meaningful relationships, giving back to my community, and using my work to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
