About Maria

Maria M. Colon-Galarza, MS, CIH, is a seasoned government safety and health leader and Certified Industrial Hygienist with more than two decades of experience in occupational health, industrial hygiene, and regulatory enforcement. She currently serves as a government supervisor overseeing a worker and whistleblower protection program, where she provides technical and managerial leadership for complex safety and health investigations. Her responsibilities include directing industrial hygiene inspections, evaluating workplace hazards, and leading fatality and serious incident investigations, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and strengthening the integrity of enforcement actions.

She began her federal government service in 2010 and transitioned to state government in 2016, where she expanded her scope of responsibility in occupational safety enforcement and industrial hygiene oversight. Throughout her career, she has led and contributed to the investigation of more than 200 workplace incidents, including fatalities, amputations, and severe occupational injuries. Her work includes assessing chemical, ergonomic, and physical hazards such as toxic exposures, excessive noise, radiation, and other high-risk conditions that impact worker health and safety. She has also played a key role in strengthening whistleblower protections under OSHA Section 11(c), ensuring that workers who raise safety concerns are protected from retaliation and that their voices contribute to safer workplaces.

Maria’s professional philosophy is grounded in the belief that workplace safety is both a scientific discipline and a moral responsibility. She views her work as a vocation centered on protecting human life and preventing the devastating ripple effects that workplace tragedies have on families, coworkers, and communities. Known for her integrity, compassion, and analytical rigor, she approaches each case with a deep sense of accountability and respect for those affected. In addition to her enforcement work, she has shared her expertise through professional presentations, including a fatality case study delivered at a national/state conference in September 2024, where she emphasized lessons learned and the importance of proactive hazard recognition. 01What do you attribute your success to?

She attributes his success to a steadfast commitment to impartiality, objectivity, and integrity in every professional interaction. She believes that true leadership is built on earning trust through fairness, consistency, and ethical decision-making.
Her ability to remain confidential and discreet has allowed colleagues and clients to feel secure, respected, and heard. She understands that creating a psychologically safe and supportive work environment is just as important as enforcing policies and procedures. By balancing compassion with accountability, she has consistently fostered workplaces where people can thrive without fear of retaliation. she views zero-tolerance for retaliation not simply as a policy, but as a core principle that protects dignity and encourages transparency. Her success is also rooted in strong investigative competence and a dedication to uncovering facts with honesty and professionalism.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice she ever received came from her mother, who strongly believed that all women should pursue education and continue advancing their knowledge throughout life.
Her mother encouraged her daughter, friends, and family to never stop learning, because education creates confidence, independence, and opportunity. That advice shaped her mindset of continuous growth, inspiring her to always seek new knowledge, embrace challenges, and keep evolving both personally and professionally.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

She would encourage young women entering the industry to believe in themselves and never underestimate the value of their voice. Even in industries traditionally dominated by men, she believes confidence, knowledge, and authenticity can break barriers and create meaningful change. She would remind them that their perspectives, ideas, and leadership are not only important but necessary for growth and innovation. Most importantly, she would inspire them to remain resilient, speak up with confidence, and never allow anyone to diminish their potential.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

She believes some of the biggest challenges in the field today are managing the psychological and emotional stress that comes with handling sensitive situations, while also addressing growing investigation backlogs that can impact timely resolutions.
At the same time, she sees tremendous opportunity in promoting a proactive safety culture where employees feel supported, protected, and empowered to speak openly without fear. She believes organizations that prioritize trust, transparency, and early intervention will create stronger, healthier, and more resilient workplaces for the future.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

She believes the most important values in both her work and personal life are faith, family, accountability, integrity, compassion, and empathy. She is deeply committed to making decisions based on factual evidence, honesty, and safety standards rather than production speed, cost-cutting, or favoritism. Transparency and courage guide her leadership style, allowing her to stand firm in difficult situations while always advocating for what is right and ethical. Her compassion extends beyond the workplace through her volunteer work in hospice care, where she spends time talking, reading, and simply offering human connection and comfort to patients. She believes true success is measured not only by professional achievements, but by the positive impact, kindness, and integrity a person brings into the lives of others.
