Her Story

About Maria

I've been working in sales for over 20 years, and I've been a sales analyst for more than 10 years now. I started my career in retail while I was still in college, working as an assistant manager for companies like Contempo Casuals and Wet Seal. From there, my career expanded into sales management, customer service, and inside sales, which eventually led me into my current role as a sales analyst. I majored in communication, which has been incredibly helpful in drafting analysis and communicating what I'm finding in data. While it has nothing to do with analysis by itself, as a communication major I learned how to write and speak clearly about the data as I see it. I also had a strong math background, and I was a teacher's assistant for a statistics course in college, which is actually where I developed my career from. My most notable professional achievement has been developing my own voice to where people are actually listening to the advice I'm giving them and taking the analysis I provide and acting on it to make decisions that help the business.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't wait for permission to believe in yourself. You're far more capable and powerful than you realize. If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her to trust her instincts more and recognize her own value much earlier. When I was younger, I spent too much time worrying about what other people thought about my work, my decisions, and even my personal life. I thought success meant proving myself constantly, which eventually turned me into an unhappy workaholic in my 30s through early 40s, and got me nowhere. I would also tell young women that ambition is important, but so is enjoying your life while you're building your career. Success means a lot more when you allow yourself the space to experience the journey instead of constantly chasing the next milestone.
