About Maria
Maria Huel serves as Supervising Paralegal and DOJ Accredited Representative at New York Legal Assistance Group, a role she has held since February 2024. With 12 years of experience in immigration law, she manages a caseload of clients, representing them before USCIS on affirmative cases including family-based petitions, form-based petitions, and humanitarian relief such as VAWA for victims of domestic violence or crimes. She also oversees a team of four paralegals, providing mentorship and guidance while handling managerial tasks for her unit. Maria holds a bachelor's degree from the Dominican Republic and an Associate of Applications in Paralegal Studies from Plaza College, where she also completed ESL studies. She is currently pursuing an LLM at Brooklyn Law School to validate her credentials as a lawyer. Maria obtained her DOJ accreditation to practice immigration law with nonprofit organizations and maintains her credential through 40 hours of annual training. She is a member of AILA and participates in roundtable discussions on immigration policy. Additionally, she conducts monthly Know Your Rights workshops to support the Hispanic and Latino community and new arrivals in New York. In 2023, she was recognized by the mayor of New York City.
