Her Interview

Ten minutes with Maria

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God's grace, a strong work ethic, and the determination to keep moving forward even when life doesn't go according to plan. I've also been incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system of family, mentors, colleagues, and friends who have encouraged me through every season. Those experiences have taught me that resilience is one of our greatest strengths, and that purpose often grows through perseverance.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of career advice I've ever received was, "Perception is reality." While I've learned that everyone's perspective is different, the lesson behind it has stayed with me. It encouraged me to step back, consider how others may experience my communication, and remain open to feedback. As a communications professional, that has been invaluable because understanding your audience is just as important as crafting the message.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to be proactive and intentional about building their careers. Don't wait for opportunities to come to you—create them. Some of the best opportunities I've had came through informational interviews, networking, and building genuine relationships, even on social media. Those conversations can open doors you didn't even know existed.

I also believe in the power of mentorship, but I encourage people to think of it as a two-way relationship. Ask how you can support your mentors, not just what they can do for you. Some of my strongest professional relationships have been built on mutual respect and reciprocity.

Once you get your foot in the door, be curious and go above and beyond what's expected. Do your homework before asking questions, then ask thoughtful ones that show you've made the effort. Learn how to manage up, anticipate needs, and become someone your team can count on.

Finally, lead with kindness and professionalism. Treat everyone with respect—from the CEO to the administrative assistant—because every person contributes to an organization's success. And while it's important to seek advice, remember that not every piece of advice is meant for you. Sometimes people speak from their own fears or past experiences. Listen, learn, but ultimately make decisions that align with your values, your goals, and the path God has for you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in our profession right now is that the communications landscape—and the job market—are changing rapidly. Many talented professionals have had to rethink what their careers look like, and I've experienced that firsthand. Consulting has given me the opportunity to continue doing meaningful work, sharpen my skills, and partner with incredible organizations while remaining open to the right long-term leadership opportunity. It's reinforced something I already believed: our careers aren't always linear, but every experience has value if we're willing to keep learning, growing, and adapting.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I try to lead with humanity first. Behind every email, meeting, deadline, and metric is a person with their own experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Whether I'm leading a communications strategy or mentoring someone in my community, I believe emotional intelligence, empathy, and respect are just as important as technical expertise.

I also value authenticity and accountability. I'm not afraid to admit when I've made a mistake or ask for help when I need it, because I believe growth comes from honesty and a willingness to learn. Rather than dwelling on problems, I try to focus on solutions and how we can move forward together.

As a Black woman, I've also learned the importance of bringing my authentic self to every space I'm invited into. I believe our unique perspectives are strengths, and I hope my work encourages others to lead with confidence, integrity, and compassion.
