Her Story
About Maria
With more than 36 years of experience as a mental health therapist, Maria Nemec has dedicated her career to helping individuals and families navigate life's most difficult challenges. After building a successful private practice in Annapolis, Maryland, she relocated to Florida and founded Pathways to Peace in 2015. Inspired by her own journey through divorce and personal trauma, Maria chose the name Pathways to Peace to reflect her belief that healing is possible and that every person deserves the opportunity to find hope, resilience, and inner peace. Maria has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders since 1996 and is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS). In addition to her expertise in eating disorder recovery, she provides compassionate care for individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship and family challenges, divorce, and the emotional impact of cancer. Throughout her career, she has worked across a wide range of clinical settings, bringing decades of experience, empathy, and evidence-based care to adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Passionate about innovative approaches to healing, Maria is also the co-creator and facilitator of the Arts in Healing Creative Arts Program, which integrates visual art, dance, music, and therapeutic movement to help participants process trauma, build resilience, and reconnect with themselves. Her work reflects a holistic philosophy that combines clinical expertise with creativity, empowering clients to transform life's challenges into opportunities for growth, healing, and lasting peace.

Ten minutes with Maria
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, motivation, and dedication to my work. Building meaningful professional relationships, maintaining a strong reputation within the community, and effectively connecting with those I serve have all contributed to my growth. I also believe compassion for my clients and the guidance and mentorship I’ve received throughout my career have played a significant role in helping me succeed.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Rather than receiving one piece of career advice that stood out above the rest, I learned the most from experienced colleagues who mentored me and shared their knowledge of private practice. Their practical guidance helped me develop the skills needed to navigate both the clinical and business aspects of my profession.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women entering this field to gain experience from inpatient psychiatric or hospital settings early in their careers. Working with individuals facing the most severe mental health challenges provides invaluable experience, builds confidence, and develops clinical skills that make working with less acute cases much more manageable later on.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is the financial side of providing quality mental health care. Low insurance reimbursement rates, the administrative demands of billing and recordkeeping, and the fact that many clients cannot afford services all create barriers to care. In addition, creative arts workshops and similar therapeutic programs are often not covered by insurance, making it difficult to provide these valuable services in an accessible and affordable way. Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to continue expanding innovative approaches that support clients' healing and overall well-being.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my professional and personal life are hard work, compassion, dedication, and a genuine passion for helping others. I am committed to supporting people as they recover, grow, and build healthier, more fulfilling lives, and these values shape every aspect of the work I do.
