Her Story
About Maria Cristina
My career in marketing began at Canon Latin America’s regional office in Miami, where I had the opportunity to be part of a major shift in the company’s communication strategy for the Latin American market. At the time, our team worked to move away from a fully U.S. centered marketing approach by developing campaigns that reflected the culture, identity, and consumer behavior of regional audiences. One of the milestones from that experience was helping develop Canon’s first television commercials for Peru and Colombia, which strengthened the brand’s connection with consumers across South America.
That experience became the foundation for what has now been more than 15 years of professional growth across marketing management, brand management, product management, and project management. Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by a strong interest in understanding how brands connect with people and how strategy translates into real customer experiences.
One of the most rewarding experiences in my career was working on travel retail store development projects for a distributor representing premium fragrance and personal care brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works in international airport retail environments. While the role required coordination with engineers, contractors, suppliers, and international stakeholders, what truly allowed me to execute those projects successfully was my background in project, marketing and brand management.
In retail environments, every detail communicates the brand from store layout and product visibility to customer experience and visual presentation. Understanding how a brand should be perceived and experienced was essential to maintaining consistency and protecting brand identity throughout each project. That experience reinforced for me how important it is for marketing professionals to effectively communicate brand vision across multidisciplinary teams to ensure that execution aligns with the brand’s positioning and customer expectations.
Over the years, I’ve learned that marketing is both strategic and highly adaptive. Even with the same product, the right approach can vary completely depending on the audience, region, and cultural context. That constant need to analyze, adapt, and think creatively is what continues to inspire me professionally.
Today, I work as a consultant supporting businesses and entrepreneurs with both traditional and digital marketing strategies. My focus is helping brands better understand their audiences and transform those insights into strategies that create engagement, consistency, and long-term growth. What I enjoy most is helping businesses translate ideas into meaningful brand experiences that genuinely connect with people.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I believe one of the key factors behind my professional growth has been a genuine commitment to continuous learning. I don’t see learning as something that ends at any stage of a career especially in industries driven by innovation, technology, and changing consumer behavior. To me, professional development is an ongoing process that requires curiosity, adaptability, and the willingness to evolve constantly.
I make a conscious effort to stay informed about new trends, emerging technologies, and shifts within the industries I work in because I believe staying current is essential to bringing value to any organization, brand, or client. Recently, I’ve become particularly interested in the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and its impact on marketing, business strategy, and communication. I’m currently exploring opportunities to pursue formal certification in AI to continue expanding my knowledge in this area.
I’ve been exposed to a wide range of AI platforms, tools, and applications that are already transforming the way businesses operate and connect with consumers.
For me, that reinforces the importance of remaining open to learning and continuously developing new skills to adapt, contribute, and stay ahead in a constantly evolving professional landscape.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I've received is that starting over is not easy, and not having all the answers is okay. I have been there. At one point in my career, I moved into a completely different industry and chose to step out of my comfort zone, and that made all the difference. Something I have learned is that at some point, you have to be brave enough to give yourself the chance to prove that you can do it. You are more capable than what you think, but you won't know it until you make the decision to take the risk and do it. And believe me, nothing is going to be perfect. It's like a roller coaster, but I love roller coasters. I decided that I couldn't fall behind, that I needed to prepare myself, that I needed to stay curious about everything going on around my life and my professional life, and to keep moving forward. So basically, a good message could be just trust yourselves. You are more ready than you think.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
One of the biggest pieces of advice I would give to young women entering this industry is to trust themselves and not be afraid of the learning process.
Confidence doesn’t mean having everything figured out from the beginning. In many cases, growth comes through trial, experience, mistakes, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when things don’t go perfectly the first time.
I believe it’s important to understand that success is rarely a straight line. There are many ways to reach the same goal, and part of professional growth is discovering which path aligns best with your strengths, values, and passions. Every experience, even the difficult ones, teaches you something valuable and helps shape the professional you become.
I often compare it to a journey.
There are multiple roads that can take you to the same destination, and along the way you learn which environments, challenges, and experiences help you grow the most. Sometimes the path may feel uncertain or more difficult than expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. The important thing is to remain open to learning, adapting, and continuing to move forward.
When you eventually look back and see everything you’ve accomplished, every challenge and lesson becomes part of what made the journey meaningful. And I think that realization is one of the most rewarding parts of building a career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think one of the biggest challenges, but also one of the biggest opportunities, in my field is the need to constantly adapt and collaborate across disciplines that may be completely outside your original area of expertise.
A few years ago, I was given the opportunity to join a company to manage projects within a market that was entirely new to me. While I already had a strong background in marketing and brand management, the role required me to expand far beyond the traditional scope of marketing. I quickly realized that to successfully develop and execute projects, I needed to communicate and collaborate effectively with professionals from many different fields whose expertise was essential to the final result.
At the beginning, that was intimidating because it pushed me far outside my comfort zone. I had to learn new terminology, understand different workflows, and develop the ability to translate brand vision into a language that aligned with operational and technical execution. It required a completely different level of communication, organization, and adaptability.
At the same time, that experience became one of the most valuable learning opportunities in my career. It taught me that successful projects are rarely built by one department alone. They come together when different areas of expertise collaborate toward the same objective while maintaining a clear understanding of the brand, the customer experience, and the overall vision behind the project.
Looking back, that experience completely changed my perspective professionally. It reinforced my confidence in being able to learn, adapt, and grow in unfamiliar environments. It also showed me that many of the limitations we place on ourselves are often based more on fear of the unknown than on actual capability.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
One of the values that is most important to me, both professionally and personally, is adaptability. I strongly believe that nothing in life or business is completely fixed industries evolve, technology changes, markets shift, and people grow. Because of that, I think it’s essential to remain open to change, continuous learning, and new opportunities.
Another value that I consider extremely important is the willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. Growth rarely happens when we stay in familiar situations all the time. Of course, change can feel uncomfortable or even intimidating, but I believe that confidence is built through action, not before it. Many times, clarity and self-confidence only come after we take the first step and allow ourselves to try something new.
For me, perseverance is equally important. There will always be uncertainty, challenges, and moments where things may not go exactly as planned, but continuing to move forward is what creates growth and opportunity. I believe that taking action, learning through experience, and remaining resilient are what ultimately help us discover what we are truly capable of achieving.
Both in my professional career and personal life, I try to approach challenges with curiosity, adaptability, and the mindset that every experience, even the difficult ones, can become an opportunity to learn and evolve.
