Her Interview
Ten minutes with Maria
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success is rooted in a commitment to continuous growth, a passion for improving the patient care experience through operational excellence and strong compliance controls, and the ability to build trusted partnerships across an organization.
Each stage of my career journey has provided a unique perspective on how healthcare organizations can achieve their mission while navigating increasingly complex regulatory and operational environments. I attribute much of my success to embracing every opportunity as a learning experience and staying focused on the broader purpose behind the work: ensuring patients receive quality care supported by ethical, compliant, and sustainable business practices.
I attribute my long-term success to maintaining a growth mindset and leading with purpose. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and the ability to adapt, remain curious, and embrace change is essential. I strive to approach every challenge as an opportunity to strengthen processes, develop people, and create value for the organization. This perspective has allowed me to evolve professionally while staying aligned with my core belief that effective compliance leadership helps organizations do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
"Never limit yourself to learning only your current role. Learn the business."
Over the past decade, my career journey from healthcare administration to the revenue cycle and ultimately to regulatory compliance has reinforced the value of that advice. Each experience expanded my perspective and aided in my understanding of how operational, financial, and compliance decisions collectively impact organizational success. By remaining motivated, seeking understanding and opportunities beyond my immediate responsibilities, and building strong partnerships with executives and cross-functional leaders, I have been able to contribute more strategically and create greater value for the organizations I serve.
As a Compliance Director, I encourage others to embrace continuous learning and view every role as a steppingstone to broader leadership opportunities. The healthcare landscape is constantly evolving, and those who are willing to adapt, grow, and understand the bigger picture are often the ones best positioned to drive meaningful change and lasting impact.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women not to overlook entry-level opportunities. Healthcare compliance, and healthcare administration as whole, is a sustainable and rewarding field where every role provides valuable experience. The skills you develop early in your career will continue to serve you as you grow professionally, so stay committed to learning and building your expertise.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in healthcare compliance today is keeping pace with an increasingly complex regulatory environment while supporting organizations through rapid operational and technological change. At the same time, this presents a tremendous opportunity for compliance leaders to move beyond a traditional oversight role and become strategic partners to executives in driving organizational success.
Having spent the past decade in healthcare administration, the revenue cycle, and now regulatory compliance, I have seen firsthand how closely operational performance, financial stewardship, and compliance excellence are connected. The most successful organizations are those that view compliance not as a barrier, but as a business enabler that helps mitigate risk, strengthen culture, and support informed decision-making.
The opportunity to leverage data, collaboration, and proactive risk management presents an exciting opportunity to create sustainable value for both the organization and the patients we serve. As healthcare continues to evolve, compliance leaders have a unique opportunity to influence positive change, foster a culture of integrity, and help organizations navigate complexity with confidence and purpose.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I believe integrity is the foundation of everything I do. Demonstrating authenticity, accountability, and professionalism in every situation is essential to both my personal and professional success.
As a compliance professional, integrity serves as the foundation of my leadership approach. Whether partnering with executives, supporting operational teams, or navigating complex regulatory challenges, I strive to make decisions that align with both organizational goals and ethical principles. Authenticity is equally important as meaningful relationships are built when people know they can rely on a leader who is transparent, approachable, and genuine.
In both my career and personal life, these values help guide how I lead, collaborate, and serve others. They inspire me to continuously learn, remain accountable, and create an environment where people feel empowered to speak up, grow, and contribute their best work. Ultimately, I believe lasting success is both professional and personal endeavors is measured not only by outcomes, but by the integrity with which we achieve them and the positive impact we have on those around us.
