Her Story

About Maria

Maria Valdovinos serves as Vice President of Commercial Flooring Systems, a business she launched in March of this year after eight years in the commercial flooring industry. Based in Lynnwood, Washington, she oversees all aspects of operations including project management, material sourcing, procurement, estimating, and field execution through project completion. Maria earned an Associate's in Business from Green River Community College in 2012. She is currently pursuing state certification for her Minority Business Enterprise after self-certifying. An immigrant who migrated from Mexico with her family, Maria draws motivation from her experiences as a woman in the predominantly male construction industry and attributes her success to overcoming life's difficulties and encouragement from older peers who urged her to take a breath and get it done. She values integrity and follow-through in both personal and professional matters as a believer in Jesus Christ. Maria actively volunteers with Team Survivor Northwest, supporting cancer-related activities after recently beating cancer herself, and advises young women entering the field to never give up because anything is possible.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Maria

01What do you attribute your success to?

I find a lot of motivation in a lot of the difficulties that I've dealt with in life. I'm also an immigrant, migrated from Mexico with my family many, many years ago, and being a woman in construction that's a predominantly male-run industry has definitely taught me a good bit, and has also kind of motivated me to help pave the way for more.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I would just get a lot of push and feedback from a lot of my older peers. They were just always talking that I could do it. Whenever I would second-guess myself, they would just say take a breath, get it done. That definitely just pushed me and impulsed me to just get to different levels.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just don't give up, anything is possible.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges: Being a newer business, scaling is very difficult. You have to have a lot of built-up equity into your brand in order for people to trust you and maintain larger contracts with vendors and contractors. Opportunities: Seeing a new wave of inclusivity with more women-owned businesses and women on the field. Minority-owned businesses making breakthroughs beyond just installation.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is very important to me in everything that I do, both personal and in business. I also think of just follow-through with everything that we promise and we do. I'm a big believer of Jesus Christ, so I carry that with everything that I do, both personal and in business.
