Her Story

About Maria

Maria J. Vallejo is an accomplished educational leader with more than two decades of experience in K–12 education, instructional leadership, and multilingual learning. She currently serves as Assistant Principal within the Diocese of Columbus, a position she has held for the past five years. Originally from Mexico City, Mexico, Maria relocated to the United States 24 years ago, where she pursued two master's degrees to earn her teaching and administrative licensure. She began her U.S. career in public education before joining the Diocese of New York and later relocating to Columbus, Ohio. Since 2008, she has devoted her career to serving the Latino community within Catholic education, building on her early teaching experience as a French language educator in Mexico and her passion for fostering inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments.

In her role as Assistant Principal, Maria provides comprehensive leadership across academic, operational, and student support initiatives. She oversees federal education grants, including Title I, Title II, Title III, and Title IV programs, manages school budgets, coordinates student assessment through the Renaissance testing platform, and supervises tutoring programs and educational enrichment opportunities for economically disadvantaged students. She also plays a vital role in supporting family engagement by serving as a fluent Spanish and French interpreter and translator, ensuring effective communication between the school and its diverse community. Her expertise encompasses instructional leadership, strategic planning, curriculum development, classroom management, data-driven decision-making, educational technology, diversity, equity, inclusion, and continuous school improvement.

Maria is guided by a servant leadership philosophy centered on empowering others to succeed. Inspired by John C. Maxwell's belief that talents and gifts are meant to be shared, she is committed to mentoring students, supporting families, developing educators, and collaborating with fellow administrators to strengthen school communities. She believes that effective leadership is rooted in generosity, service, and lifelong learning, and she continually seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge and leadership capacity. Through her dedication to educational excellence, cultural inclusion, and faith-based service, Maria strives to create meaningful opportunities that enable every student, educator, and family to reach their fullest potential.

Ten minutes with Maria

01What do you attribute your success to?

My career has been blessed with many successes, as well as failures—or, perhaps more accurately, opportunities for growth. I say “blessed” because, through every success and every challenge, I have been surrounded by the unwavering support of my family. My parents, siblings, husband, children, and friends have all shaped my life in meaningful ways, even those I no longer see often—or at all. Above all, my faith and my relationship with what I call my Heavenly Family have guided me every step of the way, providing strength, wisdom, and direction throughout my journey.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received comes from John C. Maxwell, who teaches that our talents and gifts are meant to be shared with others—like a flowing stream rather than a lake that simply contains. That perspective has shaped both my personal and professional life by reminding me that true success is measured not only by individual achievement but also by the positive impact we have on those around us. I strive to share the knowledge, opportunities, and experiences I gain with others, believing that empowering those in my community fosters collective growth, strengthens relationships, and creates lasting value for everyone.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is this: We need your unique voice, your perspective, your talents, and your gifts. The qualities that make you who you are have the power to strengthen our profession and transform the lives of those you serve.

This path is not without challenges, but it is one of the most meaningful and rewarding journeys you can choose because it is rooted in service, compassion, and purpose. There will be moments that test your resilience, but those moments will also shape your character, deepen your wisdom, and remind you why you began.

If you are willing to invest your time, your heart, and your dedication in serving others, you will discover that the lives you touch will also transform your own. The impact you make will extend far beyond the classroom, the office, or the community you serve. The personal and professional fulfillment that comes from helping others is immeasurable, making every sacrifice and every challenge worthwhile. Lead with courage, serve with humility, and never underestimate the difference one dedicated woman can make.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities in education, whether as a teacher or administrator, is the ability to empower students, parents, educators, and fellow leaders to reach their fullest potential. By fostering collaboration, continuous learning, and a shared commitment to excellence, we can create meaningful and lasting impact within our school communities. At the same time, one of the most significant challenges is continually growing as a leader to better serve others. This requires an ongoing commitment to professional development, exploring innovative leadership practices, and seeking new strategies that strengthen our ability to inspire, support, and guide those entrusted to our care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life are generosity, patience, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to serving others. I believe that one of the greatest gifts we can offer is ourselves—our time, our knowledge, our encouragement, and our willingness to walk alongside others with kindness and understanding, especially during life’s most challenging moments.

I also strive to approach each day with gratitude and purpose, recognizing that opportunities for growth often come disguised as obstacles. Every challenge has the potential to teach us resilience, deepen our character, and strengthen our faith. By embracing these moments with courage, hope, and a servant’s heart, I continue to grow as a leader, nurture meaningful relationships, and make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of those I am privileged to serve.
