Her Interview

Ten minutes with Maria

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to sharing my journey as an art curator and founder of In the Eye of the Beholder Art Gallery and The Art of Four Art Initiative, advocating for African American and underserved artists in San Antonio. As a self-taught curator, I learned through experience and mentorship from Frank Frazier and Dion of the Harlem Fine Arts Show, while opportunities like participating in the Harlem Fine Arts Show and being accepted to Art Basel have helped shape my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received came through mentorship. Frank Frazier introduced me to the art industry and took me to my first Art Basel, while Dion from the Harlem Fine Arts Show provided valuable encouragement and support. Their guidance taught me the importance of mentorship, taking opportunities, and continuing to grow.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay true to your values, believe in yourself, and never give up. Perseverance and authenticity will help you navigate challenges and build a meaningful career.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities for my nonprofit is increasing visibility and exposure. Reaching a wider audience will help us connect with more supporters, expand our impact, and create greater opportunities for underserved artists.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are hard work, perseverance, passion, and community. I believe in learning through the “school of hard knocks,” staying committed to my goals, and using my talents to connect with and uplift others. My Cuban, Panamanian, and Caribbean heritage also inspires my passion for cooking, which I see as a way to show love and bring people together. I’m equally passionate about creating a platform that promotes the new Black art movement and amplifies the work of underserved artists.
