Her Story

About Mariah

Mariah Handy serves in the Attorney General's Office in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she advocates for consumers in the area of consumer protection. She entered the legal sector in 2014, beginning in private legal work before moving to legal banking, where she handled collections. After being let go due to restructuring at the bank, she joined the Attorney General's Office in January, finding the role fulfilling as it allows her to give back and make a difference. Handy graduated in 2022, though she notes that her professional successes have stemmed more from her experience and initiative than from her educational background. She started at a law firm handling paper clipping and documents, asked questions to learn, and advanced to a supervisory role before her time at the bank. Handy attributes her success to her parents, who taught her consistency and diligence as hard workers, and to her family's spirituality. Outside of work, she mentors children at her church.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mariah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I equate my success to my parents who taught me consistency and to be a diligent hard worker. They have been very influential in my and my sister's lives, and our spirituality has a lot to do with that as well.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep going and ask questions. Be interested in what other people are doing. Education is important but if you're passionate about something, try to make your mark. When someone's willing to take a chance on you, show them that you're here and you can do it. You can achieve anything that you set your heart and mind to.
