Her Story
About Mariam
I am an operations manager at the Center for Public Research and Leadership at Columbia Law School where I handle onboarding and offboarding, light accounting, reimbursements, supply purchases, and act as liaison to the broader law school. Before this, I was a paralegal at a big law firm helping attorneys prepare for trial, an intern on the communications side, a resident assistant mentoring first-year students, and an office assistant. I earned my bachelor's in English Literature from New York University after starting as a communications major.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received in college was that if you get the answer no, just know that no stands for next opportunity. The door closes, another one is surely going to open.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't psych yourself out. It's normal to have imposter syndrome and feel like this career path might be too advanced or intimidating because you are the backbone of any department. Turn that nervousness into power and drive to work and see what you can do. Within the end of the year you'll be amazed at how far you've come.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I really value community and creating a space for others. Through my career I've learned it's not just an individual journey of self-betterment but about learning from others and pulling others up while you ascend. I try to create an environment where people feel supported, connected, and know that I care for their betterment as a person and employee.
