Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mariam

01What do you attribute your success to?

Honestly, a lot of grit. I grew up really poor. My mom was always finding side jobs to hustle and help supplement the income where she could. And then, probably when my children were... I have two kids, and when my son was like four, I became a full-time single mom where I was completely financially dependent on myself, and that really taught me how to just hustle quite a bit. I wanted to be somebody that my kids could be proud of and look up to, and I didn't want my kids to think that life circumstances define who you are, and that how you show up is you're in charge of your own destiny.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

From a sales perspective, some of the best advice I've ever gotten is, like, talk to me like I'm a friend, don't talk to me like you're somebody you're trying to convince me to buy. And I've really done that and lived my life by that mantra. And just showing up as unapologetically me every single day.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

So I work in the technology space, and especially in the integrator space, which is really a man's world. And, you know, sadly, there is a stigma that women aren't as smart as men, or they don't know as much, but it's really just showing up and not taking any shit from anybody. That's a very technical way of putting it. It's a very official term, but honestly, just, like, be confident in what you know, and don't let other people lessen your value because they don't understand what you know. And it's been hard for me, you know, in this space to be somebody that comments are made, like, oh, she's actually really smart, too. And instead of, like, letting that bother me, I just really lean into it to kind of prove the narrative wrong.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I mean, honestly, just keeping up with technology, getting ahead of trends, trying to be relevant in a very fast-moving space, and that can be really challenging when you work for a big organization, and, like, you don't have the R&D funds to maybe make an investment or a move that you feel like would impact your industry. So that can be really challenging, and then just when you are especially a leader in sales, like, how do you remain competitive in a space that there are literally 100 other people that are selling a similar product. So that can always be challenging, and then just making sure that you stay informed. Like, there's so much information out there, and new technologies that you have to learn. And honestly, like, it's just staying relevant.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Core foundational belief of kindness. Treat everybody as if they matter, no matter what their rank or title is. Be a kind human being. There's too much hate in this world, and I really try to look at everything with through a lens of grace. Somebody's, you know, having a bad day, I always ask myself, like, what they might have something else going on at home that you don't know about, so treat them, you know, with kindness. And also, like, show up with integrity, keep your word, do as you say and keep your commitments, that really fosters trust in relationships and all types of dynamics. And I try to just be somebody that other people want to be around, and the, you know, live the Good Samaritan kind of philosophy of do unto others as you would have done to you.
