Maricela Ibarra
Maricela Ibarra is a dedicated Student Services Professional at Sonoma State University, where she has built an impressive career spanning over two decades in higher education. With a deep commitment to student success, Maricela serves as the Senior Credential and Student Services Coordinator for the College of Education, Counseling, and Ethnic Studies, supporting aspiring educators through every step of their academic and credentialing journey. Her passion for service, equity, and student empowerment is at the heart of her work, helping students navigate the complexities of higher education with compassion and expertise. A proud Sonoma State University alumna, Maricela earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in Chicano Latino Studies and her Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education with a concentration in Curriculum Teaching and Learning. She further advanced her professional knowledge through the university’s Human Resource Management Certificate Program. Drawing on her strong academic background and extensive experience, she has become a trusted advisor and mentor known for her skills in academic advising, career counseling, and student development. Her work reflects a deep understanding of the intersection between education, culture, and community engagement. Beyond her professional role, Maricela is deeply involved in her local community. She has served in leadership roles such as PTA President and Parliamentarian at University Elementary, Site Council Board member at University Elementary and Technology High School and continues to advocate for the success and well-being of children and families. Maricela is also involved with SSU's Alianza for Equity Affinity group as well as Latino Alliance of Cotati-Rohnert Park. Fluent in Spanish and passionate about cultural inclusion, Maricela embodies the values of lifelong learning, collaboration, and service. Her career and volunteerism together reflect a steadfast dedication to uplifting others and fostering educational environments where all students can thrive.

I attribute my success to my family’s strong support in education. Their dedication to learning and teaching instilled in me the values of hard work, curiosity, and continuous growth, which have guided me throughout my career.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to keep going. No matter the challenges or setbacks, perseverance and determination always lead to growth and new opportunities.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is simple: keep pushing forward. The road won’t always be easy, but every obstacle will teach you something that strengthens your skills and character. The light at the end of the tunnel is real—keep moving toward it.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in my field right now is ensuring adequate financial support for students who struggle to continue their education due to financial constraints. Addressing this issue not only helps remove barriers to learning but also creates pathways for talented individuals to reach their full potential.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Service and dedication are at the heart of everything I do. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping staff and students through the admissions process and celebrating their achievements. Being part of their educational journey is what inspires and energizes me every single day
