A native of France, she built her academic foundation through extensive study in Cultural Anthropology and Art History at the Université de Poitiers and Université Bordeaux Segalen, later earning a Master's degree in French Language and Literature from Cornell University. Her journey to the United States was marked by a prestigious fellowship from Bryn Mawr College, which launched her career in American higher education and set the stage for a distinguished tenure spanning college-level instruction at institutions such as Colgate University and Wells College, before finding her home at Castilleja School in Palo Alto, California — a renowned all-girls institution where she has taught since 2021.
Beyond the classroom, Marie Martine is a creative force who channels her commitment to sustainability and hands-on learning into workshops that inspire her students to see the world differently. She designs and leads extracurricular programs where young women learn to craft eco-friendly jewelry and functional art pieces from repurposed paper and fabric, transforming everyday materials into meaningful creations. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to maintaining a positive outlook and an unwavering sense of curiosity. I am constantly generating new ideas and finding ways to bring them to life. For me, success is not defined by financial gain — it is about balance, giving back to others, and using my time with intention and purpose.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to stay curious and remain open to the world around you. Use social media and technology as purposeful tools for inspiration rather than distraction. Do not feel pressured to invent everything from scratch — look at what already exists, find ways to improve it, and always keep in mind what people truly need. The most meaningful work often comes from thoughtful creativity rooted in real solutions.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges I see is the increasing time demands that come with modern teaching, particularly with formats like remote and online instruction, which require significant additional preparation. Another challenge is that many talented educators and students are simply unaware of the resources available to them. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunity in technology — it allows us to expose students to global perspectives and possibilities they might never encounter otherwise, and to find tools that help us organize our time, grow our creative work, and make a broader impact.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values I hold closest are curiosity, positivity, creativity, and generosity. I also believe deeply in environmental awareness — finding beauty and purpose in what already exists rather than always consuming something new. Balance is essential to me, as is using time meaningfully and with a spirit of giving. These principles guide both how I teach and how I live.
