Her Story

About Marijke

I run a consulting business called Voice Shape Leadership Systems, where my mission is to give a voice to the voiceless. I work with higher education organizations to help them improve retention of non-traditional students, especially those who have experienced trauma, sexual assault, or domestic violence. When these students come back to school, they often get bypassed and looked over, and I help institutions understand and recognize these students. My philosophy is that a good leader can be led - I let students lead me into conversations so I can truly understand what's happening with them. One of my most meaningful achievements was when I was working with higher education and recognized that a young lady on campus was homeless, even though no one else knew it. People would walk past her without realizing she had been there overnight, showering in the gym. I took the time to speak with her, reached out to her, and let her lead me into a conversation. I found out what was wrong and made sure she was taken care of while keeping her dignity intact. She went on to graduate from a university, wrote a book, and dedicated it to me. She's now in Rhode Island doing amazing work, and each time she accomplishes something, it makes my heart flutter.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to always be my authentic self. This principle has guided me throughout my career and helps me connect genuinely with the students and organizations I work with.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my personal and work life are honesty, loyalty, and respect. These principles guide how I interact with students, colleagues, and the organizations I work with, and they're fundamental to my approach of giving voice to the voiceless and maintaining dignity for those I serve.
