Her Story
About Marilyn
I started out working in a hospital as a dietitian, then decided education might be more fun. Went back to school, finished a credential, and started teaching. After teaching for about 17 years at the community college, I went into college administration, progressing from department chair to assistant dean, vice president, and president. I worked in California community colleges and had an administrative assignment at Berkeley College of Music in Boston. After retiring, I did contract work as interim president or vice president of academic affairs for 10 years before fully retiring 11 years ago. Community colleges make a difference for people, and I enjoyed finding resources for faculty and staff.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Get involved in as many things as possible, seek opportunities outside your comfort zone to learn a variety of things. Networking is very important because it's who you know in addition to what you know. Do each job really well without spreading yourself too thin.
